Services for the UnderServed (S:US) is a nonprofit human services organisation founded in 1978 and based in New York City. It works with underserved New Yorkers who are experiencing homelessness, poverty or disabilities, providing support aimed at self-determination rather than prescribed paths. The organisation employs roughly 1,800 staff across its programmes.
Its fields of work span homelessness services, poverty alleviation, disability services, behavioural and social support, and community development. S:US describes its approach as translating on-the-ground learning into systemic change, supported by a focus on continuous quality improvement, programme development and social programme design.
Staff are drawn largely from the communities S:US serves, which the organisation links to a deeper local understanding and authentic client relationships. Internal culture signals include cross-functional teamwork, open communication, and an emphasis on collaboration, creativity, integrity and fairness, alongside a stated commitment to maximising individual potential and to respect for human dignity.
