Northwestern Medicine is an academic health system serving the Chicago metropolitan area through 11 hospitals and more than 200 care locations. The system combines patient care, medical research and education through a partnership between Northwestern Memorial HealthCare and the Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine, a structure that connects clinical practice directly with research laboratories. It has operated in the Chicago area for over 160 years.
Clinical work spans hospital-based acute and specialty care at nationally ranked hospitals, outpatient and primary care delivered through neighbourhood-based centres across Chicagoland, and transplant services. The system is the nation's leader in lung transplants and is known for pioneering lung repair techniques. Its translational programme is designed to move discoveries from research into bedside practice.
Northwestern Medicine describes its mission as putting patients first in all that they do, guided by an ethos of making people better by making medicine better. Its community commitments include a charity care programme providing $67.5 million in free or subsidised care annually to patients in need.
